How to edit a topic

Note: Only registered attorneys may edit Wiki Law Database. You can register here.

The most important thing to remember when you edit WikiLDB is your reader. So please keep two questions in your mind as you edit: First, are you providing helpful information? Second, are you doing so in an understandable way?

The basic edit

You can practice editing at the sandbox. (This link will open up a new web browser page so you can toggle back and forth between this page and the sandbox page.)
  • Click on the "Edit" button at top of the topic page.
  • Make the change (in compliance with copyright and other applicable laws).
    • You can undo all or part of a change before you save the topic by
      • simultaneously holding down the CTRL and Z keys OR
      • clicking on the undo button (a blue curved arrow pointing to the left and down) on the edit panel at the top of the edit page.
  • Click on the "Save" or the "Quiet save"(1) button at the bottom of the screen. Or, if you decide to not make the edit, click on the "Cancel" button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Review your edit and repeat the process if you want to make further changes.
Conflicting edits. The software will let you know if you try to edit a page that another user is editing. You can then decide whether to proceed with your edit or come back and edit again later. If two users edit different parts of a topic then the software will make those changes without a problem. If two users make conflicting edits then the software will insert "change marks" into the text indicating what the text used to look like, what the other person's edits were, and what your edits were.

Introduction to markup

The Foswiki software used by WikiLDB is designed to be as intuitive as possible. So for simple changes such as spelling and grammar all you need to do is use the edit page as if it were a word processor page. Similarly, you can "cut and paste" from within WikiLDB or from a non-WikiLDB source into WikiLDB (being careful not to violate any copyright laws).

Idiosyncrasies. A word with an embedded capital (McDonald or FitzGerald for example) is called a CamelCase word (or, sometimes, a WikiWord). The Foswiki software sees CamelCase words as topic titles. If there is no existing title with that name then the software will show a question mark on the topic page, prompting users to start a new article (Mc Donald or Fitz Gerald for example). To prevent this from happening put an exclamation mark in front of the CamelCase word ( !McDonald or !FitzGerald for example).

Another idiosyncrasy of Foswiki is that when you right-click at the end of a paragraph it thinks you want to edit the entire paragraph. To work around this foible simply add a space at the end of the paragraph and then right-click to the left of the space.

Unformatting. If you do not want to change the text but find that formatting has gotten out of control you can undo formatting using the "Remove formatting" button on the editing bar at the top of the edit screen. (It is the white block on the top row, fifth from the left, next to the A with a red line underneath it.)
